Writing EFFECTIVE Online Content

  1. Use subheads to break up major copy blocks. Since people tend to scan rather than read, make sure your subheads have some meaning related to the body of copy.
  2. Keep it simple. Stick with one main idea per copy block or paragraph. Don't introduce too many new ideas per section. In some ways, a text-heavy document is like a bad powerpoint presentation--too much copy on too few slides.
  3. Convert paragraphs to bullet points. This is especially important if you have several key features and/or benefits. Make it easy to see those key copy points.
  4. Lead with the main message and then drill down. State your main message up front and gradually add more detail to support the message.
  5. Keep it short. The rule of thumb is to use half as many words as you would use for a comparable piece of print.
  6. Keep it up-to-date! If your information is not current, people will discredit you as a reliable source and will not visit your site.
